Horses – New Arrivals

All of the horses are doing well, particularly the new arrivals. Joker, our shire horse, is now approaching seven and has really started to fill out. Spring grass will make him. He has a superb temperament.

Paddy, who we bought from a horse fair in Ireland, has turned out to be a really good gamble. He has a great personality, calm with traffic and mountain bikes. We wish we could have ten of him.

Bella is a smart coloured horse who is very good with dogs, traffic and bikes. She was perfect on New Years Day hunting, even at a very busy meet for the first time. She kept up all day and did not put a foot wrong. Not sure she likes being in a busy yard with 23 other horses, she has done nothing wrong but she is a bit mare-ish. We’ll have to think on what to do with her.

Lily came from Wales and belonged to a friend of mine. We were not too sure at first but now she is in work we have seen a huge change. She has lots of stamina and loves to work, is fast and also a very good jumper. However she can be very very stroppy and definitely not to be messed with; very near the top of a the pecking order.

There’s mud everywhere but all the horses are in really good condition, the winter has not been too bad so far!

Lily is a favourite for experienced riders.

Gill’s Kitchen!

Welcome to the riding holidays at Quantock Trekking Holidays. For those of you who don’t know these are two day riding holidays, with two all day rides, tailored made to your riding ability. I provide a welcome pack with local products for breakfast, a three course evening meal on the first night and high tea on the final day. For each meal, we will cater to your specific requirements.

We have done about a dozen riding holidays so far this year which have been great fun.

My friend said to me, “Gill you must be mad offering food for the riding breaks. It will not be straight forward!”. Having renewed my Food Hygiene course, I carefully planned my menu to try and cater for most diets, using local produce.

The second party to stay had two vegetarians and one vegan, along with three meat eaters. My learning curve suddenly increased steeply! I thoroughly enjoyed the research about the vegan diet and I found a fantastic independent health food shop in Minehead called Toucan Wholefoods. Morrison’s bakery in Minehead was also very helpful, as they have a machine that will list all the ingredients in their bakery products. Very useful to know that most of their bread is made with soya not milk, this is perfect for vegans.

Jamie Oliver came to the rescue, with his sweet potato, chick pea and spinach curry recipe. It was wonderful and was a great hit even with the meat eaters!

Warm home-made scones

Afternoon high tea was a challenge, as I like to make all the cakes and scones. This is where the ‘egg replacer’ came in, as vegans don’t eat any dairy products or eggs. I decided to make a chocolate cake, which I was very proud of, until it crumbled when I came to fill it!

The homemade lemon curd and fresh cream cake went down very well and was a popular choice along with the caramel meringues.

I use to teach Chemistry and Home Economics until last summer, but this however is a whole new world, but all very interesting!

John Lewis Riding Club

Donation to a Worthy Service

It was lovely to welcome Edwina from John Lewis back for another riding holiday after the launch of Quantock Trekking Holidays in January. For the launch, we jointly presented a cheque for £1,200 to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. We truly value the work of the Air Ambulance, who are always on hand for any problem on the Quantock Hills where a four wheel drive can’t gain access. We therefore donated the total value of the two day riding holiday to the Air Ambulance, as a contribution towards their great work.

Back for Another Round

This time around, Edwina brought another party from the John Lewis/Waitrose Riding Club for a weekend riding holiday.

Ready to ride!

Here’s a snapshot of their weekend:

Arriving after a hectic journey, the group tucked into a home-cooked three course evening meal in the Lodge. They cracked open a bottle of bubbly too! We had stocked the fridge with local produce ready for breakfast, setting the group up for the fun day ahead.

Everyone gathered at the stables on Saturday morning, suited and booted for their all-day ride with a pub lunch stop. We were told about the exercises some of them had done to loosen up before their 5 hour ride!

The group arrived at the Carew Arms for lunch, after riding through some of the most beautiful areas on the Quantock Hills. Areas such as Will’s Neck, Dead Women’s Ditch and Holford Combe. They were lucky enough to see the magnificent carpet of bluebells at Strawberry Woods!

After a well-deserved break, everyone was delighted that dinner was booked at the Rising Sun Pub, which is only 100 yards away. There was an added bonus of live music from a fantastic local band.

After a four hour ‘blast’ around the Quantock Hills the next day, followed by high tea back at the Lodge, we waved the group goodbye until next time. Then our horses began their well-earned break in the fields!
